A new update on Jay Halstead hints at his death in Chicago PD. At the start of season 10 of Chicago PD, Hank Voight and the rest of the Intelligence said goodbye to another original cast member when Jesse Lee Soffer officially quit One Chicago. It's been a struggle ever since, as the change couldn't come at a worse time for the cop show that is apparently going through an identity crisis. Since Chicago PD left the character's fate up in the air, there's interest in knowing how he's been doing. Sadly, a new update suggests that a greater tragedy is looming for Halstead.

While NBC found a way to get Halstead off One Chicago, the way it was executed remains divisive. Not only was it rushed and questionable, it ruined everything that made the character special. Suffice it to say, Halstead's Chicago PD departure was utterly disappointing. Sadly, how the show dealt with the aftermath of his sudden departure is more disheartening. However, new details about what's to come for him suggest things are about to get darker for him.
Soffer alludes to Jay Halstead's Chicago police killing

Not long after his departure from One Chicago, Soffer is expected to return to the franchise's police procedural, but not as an actor, but as a director. So, naturally, he's asked for an update on his character. Soffer assures fans that, after his fate was left hanging in the balance, the Chicago PD has a plan for Halstead. Interestingly, however, he reiterates that the show is dark - almost alluding to theories that his character's ultimate fate will be death.

For context, Halstead decided to leave Intelligence and re-enter the military, hoping to find himself after an identity crisis. The stint was supposed to last just eight months, with the promise that he would return to Chicago and be reunited with his wife, Hailey Upton. Unfortunately, it's past due date and she still hasn't heard from her husband. He has been avoiding her calls, refusing even to speak to her. It wasn't until she tried to contact her military camp that she was told that Halstead had an extension. At this point, it's nearly impossible for Halstead and Upton to still mend their marriage after what he's done.

Halstead's death is the only way Chicago PD can fix him
Chicago PD basically destroyed Halstead, but it would be hard to make up for that since Soffer is no longer on the show. As tragic as it may seem, killing the character off-screen is the best and easiest way to resolve these mistakes without further destroying the character's legacy.

Also, since it doesn't make sense to keep people invested in Upton and Halstead's romance because Soffer isn't returning to the show, his death would effectively end the romance without giving any pretense of reconciliation moving forward. That way, Chicago PD can also move Upton's arc forward without getting bogged down in his relationship with Halstead.
